My love of pop music began in the late 50's when I sang at school concerts and talent shows with my schoolmate, Stan Loh. Like most teenagers at that time, we were greatly influenced by Western pop music and idolised stars like Elvis, Buddy Holly and in particular, the Everly Brothers who bowled us over with their fabulous harmonies. Stan and I took to playing the guitar and things started to happen for us when our rendition of the Everlys' hit song - "Dream" brought us prestigious victories at two talent shows in our hometown of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Those happy days ended when I left home for Dublin in 1960 to take up further studies at Trinity College. In this fair city I met a medical student - Robert Dourado a talented singer and harmonica player from Nairobi. We teamed up and began singing at college functions and in pubs, clubs and hotels in Dublin. The money we earned was a welcome boost to our student finances. In 1963, we sang on Irish TV followed by four live sessions on Irish Radio. In 1966, we performed in the Dublin Gaiety Theatre's summer show that ran for six weeks. In the Dublin music circuit, we got to rub shoulders with top Irish balladeers like the Dubliners, Dana, Paddy Reilly, Emmet Spiceland, Johnny McEvoy and Danny Doyle.
Robert and I now live in the U K while Stan lives in Vancouver. Thanks to the internet, Stan and I continue to make and enjoy music together. Stan is a prolific song-writer while I manage to write a few myself. Thus our passion for music remains unabated. My son Kenny plays part-time with bands in Cambridge and London.
I Hope you enjoy my homespun music. Cheers!
